CREDITS: 1 (1 Class Hour)

PLACEMENT: Third Semester

PREREQUISITES: NURS 6123, NURS 7141, NURS 7143 (may be concurrent)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The third course in the graduate research sequence in which the student completes the research study. The focus of the course is on the finalization and presentation of the research project to peers and faculty.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. Complete the research study in publishable form.
2. Demonstrate proficiency in communicating research findings in both written and verbal form.
3. Critically analyze research projects presented by peers.
4. Develop a research abstract.
COURSE NARRATIVE:

Students continue to consult with faculty members for individual guidance on their research projects. Culmination of the project occurs when each student presents a detailed verbal (and visual support) presentation of their entire study to faculty and peers.

TEACHING METHODS:

Research presentations and discussion of the students particular research issues constitute the primary teaching strategy for the course. Student researchers submit oral and written projects that are evaluated by student critique. The development of verbal and written skill in the communication of research is stressed. Individual advisement supplements the experience.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS/STUDENT EVALUATION:

1. Research Paper (final edited study) 90%
2. Oral Presentations, graded p/f 10%

CRITERIA FOR COURSE EVALUATION:

Research paper: the completed paper, with all additional changes is presented. An original and two copies are required. All copies are to be paper clipped and the original will be bound and placed in the library. A fee of $3.00 is required - see the graduate secretary, Pat Hemsley. (See Research Appraisal Grading Criteria).
Grading will be based upon:

a. Clarity 15%
b. Adherence to standards 20%
c. Comprehensiveness 50%
d. Organization 15%

All papers will be submitted in APA format, 4th edition. A “Research Day” will be planned for 3 - 4 presentations. Presenters will be allowed 20 minutes. All class students are expected to attend. Faculty and other graduate students will be invited to attend.
