1 clinical support cognate is recommended.
FACULTY RESPONSIBLE: Dianne S. Moore, CNM, MPH, Ph.D., Associate Professor
Students are required to develop a clinically focused concept paper, which is preliminary to the development of a nursing research proposal.
Prerequisite knowledge of methods of research is built upon through the critique of studies and development of a literature review.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of the course, the student will:
1. Demonstrate proficiency in the skills needed to critique research proposals and reports.
2. Develop a clear, organized problem statement.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of the major retrieval systems employed by the library system.
4. Select and apply pertinent theories from nursing and related disciplines to explain empirical relationships between facts and concepts of a research question and hypothesis.
5. Synthesizes existing literature to support research questions and hypothesis.
6. Contrast the relative strengths and weaknesses of various methodological approaches to research.

NURS 7141 Nursing Research I 7. Prepare an informed consent, which reflects the rights of human subjects and principles of ethics and following Seton Hall University IRB requirements and the requirements of the institution or facility you may be using for data collection.
8. Evaluate data gathering techniques and select an appropriate technique for implementation.

10. Develop a clinically focused concept paper for review by peers.

COURSE NARRATIVE:
This course builds upon the student’s theoretical learnings from NURS 6123 and emphasizes the refinement and explication for existing theoretical formulations in nursing research.
The ethical implications inherent in clinical research are also addressed. Students examine the ethical considerations in the research studies.
Statistics are considered within the context of the research problem and the design. Students connect study variables to appropriate statistical analyses. Students are expected to come to the class with a background in statistics and computers. Learning SPSS is another requirement of the class so that code books and statistical analysis can be accomplished.
Students are expected to review and update their knowledge base in these areas on their own as part of the course prerequisites.
Through the use of lecture/discussion and seminar methods, the student is exposed to and identifies the advantages of various research approaches under consideration by her/his peers.
Student presentations of a peer’s concept paper (as primary and secondary reviewers) provide students with the opportunity to present for review and critique. These presentations provide a professional socialization function, as students develop their role in peer evaluation.

NURS 7141 Nursing Research I
TEACHING METHODS:
Lecture/discussion and seminar methods are used, supplemented by handouts, demonstration of computer capabilities, audio-visuals, and assigned and recommended readings in the course text and in supplemental bibliographies.
The seminar approach mobilizes students’ appreciation for each other as valuable professional colleagues, and fosters collaboration among them in the design of their research problems.
Students are required to present their research problems to the class within the framework of a concept paper.
The development of skills in the verbal and written communication of research is stressed.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/STUDENT EVALUATION:
1. All students will be required to use diskette in back of workbook to supplement
their understanding of the information presented in their textbook.
2. Critical review of the literature pertinent to study.
3. Conceptual framework and hypothesis development.
4. A primary and secondary review, in class of peer’s research concept paper. Faculty will chair the review; students will act as the review committee and provide written and oral feedback on the presentation and research ideas.
5. Concept paper. 60%
6. Midterm examination (based on questions from the study guide) 40%
